New project
Some of you have been helping me decide on a new project because the 77 is "done" and I have a decision making disorder.
Here 'tis:
63 Bel Air-283 2bbl PG
She needs some work, but she's nearly rust free and solid as a rock. Also already has power and front disc brakes. Mostly needs a carb rebuild, tune up, exhaust work and a LOT of cosmetic stuff. The paint is thin and it has horrible 80s fuzzy upholstery. But it's one of those I can drive around and work on at the same time.
I grew up riding around in one very similar, so the plan is to build a clone of Mom's car.

Re: New project
Gracias, Antonio.
Runs like ****, but it runs. The guy's gonna bring it to me Saturday. Had to drive 90 miles and cross state lines to get it and I don't trust it for the interstate yet.
First order of biz is carb and a tune and it should run like a guy with whos head is on fire and his azz is catchin'.

Re: New project
I've been looking at the 62-63 Chevy for years and this one is the best price for this condition car I've seen.
I looked at one last week in a little bit better shape cosmetically but rustier and the guy wanted 15k but said he'd take 12.
The gurus I've talked to said 9-11 in this area for a car like this one.
The guy I got it from got it in trade and didn't want it. He just wanted it gone so he could go get a Vette he's been looking at.
I'm sure he made a little on the deal, but I'm pretty happy with the price.
I don't think I stole it, but I didn't get bent over either.

Awesome! You have to join up on 2doorpost.com. I'm there from my old Buick Special. Like this site, a great group of car folks.

Re: New project
Oddly enough, I haven't yet found a forum that has a lot of info about this car.
Lots of Impala forums that address Imps from 58 up to now, but not much specific to 61-64 non-Impala full size cars.
And even the info on the 61-64 Imp is more scarce than I thought it would be.Not much specific to Bel Air or Biscayne.
Same goes for parts, lots of repro available for Imps. Trim pieces and upholstery are scarce for BA and Biscayne.
But I'm used to that.

Bobby, sign up at 2doorpost.com, I know of at least 2 active members there who have 63 Bel Air/Biscayne 2 doors.

Re: New project
Ha!
I'm a cruiser. I like the lil 283. It came from the factory @ 190 gross HP.
Probably enuff for me.
Nothing makes me laugh harder than those fat old men that sit in a lawn chair under a shade tree talking about how big and high powered their car is. And/or how much money they spent on their car/engine so they can drive it around from one car show to another unless it rains.

Re: New project
I hear ya on the old fat dudes sitting under a tree with a 496 and a M 22 in the car but never go more than 50 mph. There is plenty of guys like that here.

Re: New project
I agree to a point. I don't need a mountain motor just to go cruisin' -- especially since having to stop for fuel all the time would limit that.
OTH, a measly 190hp (gross, when it was new 50 years ago!) ain't gonna make the Love Boat very responsive, Roadcaptain Steubing.

Re: New project
Bach in the day, my bone stock, except for headers, 350 4bbl muncie 3.42 rear , ran a best of 15.2 at the track. Stock was 175 hp.

Re: New project
And you were so satisfied with that level of performance that you never felt the need to upgrade anything after that, right? Remind me again what you're running now?
I'm not saying it's the worst thing ever. I'm just saying it could use a little higher fun quotient.

Re: New project
FULL SPEED AHEAD!!
Where's that Julie chick? She was pretty hot IIRC.
Hell, the 305 in the Chevelle suits me fine. Its bone stock minus the exhaust. It moves along pretty good.
I figure I'll get it running as well as I can, then figure it out. I've read the 283 is pretty easy (and cheap) to get more out of.
I'm more worried about the Powerglide. I like to get on the interstate and 2 speeds makes me nervous. I've never had less than a TH350. I've heard guys say the PG is okay up to 70 mph, but I've also heard guys say that the PG is only good for racing.
