Rocker molding removal
Hey guys need a little help here. Going down tomorrow to look at a monte at the local pick and pull. One of the things I am going to be looking at is the lower rocker moldings. If they are in better shape than mine I might pick them up. Question is how to those things come off? Thanks...

Re: Rocker molding removal
The fender ones (both ahead of and behind the wheels) are held on by (2) speed nuts. The ones behind the wheels are extremely difficult to access without removing the fender liner or door. Ones that run along door bottom are held on by body clips and a Phillips screw on each end. Ones in front of the rear wheels have a body clip towards the front and a Phillips screw behind the wheel opening molding. Qtr panel moldings have (3) Phillips screws along the bottom and body clips.
Is this the one reported to be at the Pick N Pull in K.C.? Take notes as to what's good...and, some pics.

Kenny, they finally put a picture online of that Monte. It looks like a nice car. All the trim looks to be still on it.

Re: Rocker molding removal
I see that. Looks like it might have the factory Rally wheels. Would be cool if it was a swivel bucket car w/console.
Go pick that thing, Kenny!

Thanks. Is there any special way to get them off the body clips

I saw the rally wheels also. Normally they pull all the wheels off before they put them out in the yard.

You have to gently work them off the upper edge of the clip (clip is pretty much the width of the molding) with a small flat-bladed screwdriver (I use a small tack puller because the end is angled) and, when all are loose along the top, push down to free it from the lower edge of the clips. Sometimes, they pop off fairly easily...other times, you have to work them off. Patience is the key to not damaging the edge of the molding.

Re: Rocker molding removal
Kenny, were you able to score any good parts off of the Monte at Pick n Pull. Did it still look like the picture or did others beat you to the good parts.

Never made it down. Started the week not feeling well, was hoping by Friday I would feel better. Woke up Friday and saw it was cold and raining so I stayed home and did some work around the house. Planning on going this Friday if the weather holds out.

You make it down to pick that Monte yet, Kenny? Curious to know what shape it was in, options, etc.

Re: Rocker molding removal
Finally got to go down a check it out. Total waste of time. The guy behind the counter tells me they show no 77 Monte in the computer. I get my phone out and show him the info on the row 52 app. He looks again and still shows nothing. I say I will go on in and give it a look myself. After a couple of minutes the wife finds it. Here's what we found..
For some reason the doors were locked and it looked like someone had broke out the glass on the drivers door and went through the window to get inside. I went in to look at the lower marker lights in the bumper and the rear taillights, someone had broke the taillights and the front bumper was gone. Also looking at the lower rocker moldings, but the only ones worth taking were the front ones and mine are in good shape. I could not have gotten the door ones off anyway with the doors locked. The ones behind the rear tires were trashed, the one pictured was only on by the screws as the rear was so rusted. Kind of sad seeing one in this shape, but I knew going in that is was going to be there for a reason.

Re: Rocker molding removal
I'm guessing people got to it before you did. Pretty typical condition of what I find around here in the yards. If you look hard enough, there still appears to be many usable parts on it. Too bad the doors were locked as the door panels look to be in good shape. Then, there is all the other interior plastic that could also be picked and resold if not sun faded or dry-rotted. Window trim, mirrors, seat belts, engine parts, etc.
Was it a 305 or 350? Looks like the carb may have been picked.

305 it was missing. Fir some reason I could not pull up the knob on the door that had the busted glass to unlock it.

That happened to me once on a 76 with nice doors. Could not get them opened.
