correct drive shaft length
Any one out there with a 1973 chevelle with the 454 and turbo 400 short shaft trans able to tell me the correct driveshaft length for my daily driver. I have two 73 shafts from 1973 350 with a turbo 350 and one from a gmc sprint but all are too long and of course the wrong yoke. Thanks in advance

Re: correct drive shaft length
I have the 350/manual combo with 400 yoke so no help there. But if you go to this link it shows the dimensions of the turbo 350 and 400 side by side. Even just the tail length.

So maybe you can figure out the difference in length between the two trannys and you will then know how much shorter you need to cut your shaft.
Or do a google search for measuring a driveshaft. I have seen articles on that. Pretty simple process. Then you just bring the measurement to a driveshaft shop and let him cut and balance your driveshaft.

Re: correct drive shaft length
thanks Joe , you always help people (greatly appreciated) I measured my 454 four speed and it looks like 52 inches center to center on u joint , do you know anyone that would have one , rather than getting it cut and all that crap. I believe it should be the same.

Re: correct drive shaft length
Your very welcome. I dont know anyone with one. I just measured mine and it looks like 53 1/2" center to center of the U-joint ears. As for the yoke, you can pick one up anywhere on the net just make sure its about the same length as the yoke you have on your current driveshafts. You dont want the yoke all the way in or it will bottom out in the trans and crack something.
I know our cars with the turbo 350 use 27 spline yokes which would be the same yoke for a pre 70 1/2 muncie. I'm pretty sure the saginaw cars would use the 27 spline yoke as well.
Our cars with turbo 400 trans or factory Muncie use the same yoke at 32 splines.

My '74 is a 454/TH400 car. The original shaft is removed and leaning against the wall in the garage.
I can measure it when I get home from work tonight.

Re: correct drive shaft length
Keith, could you post up the length of the yoke cylinder part only?

The machined/polished portion of the yoke is 5" long.
