Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
Hi guyz
I think about to looking a 1973 Chevelle with 350 Engine probably buying. Is there a way to identify its this Chevelle a real SS? I mean with the fisher Body tag you can't identify correctly the Chevelle is an SS or not is that right?
This Car has:
350 Chevy Engine with TH350 trans
Center Console
Bucket Seats (Strange Blue color on the seats)
Black Grille with SS Emblem
Round gauges but no Tach (i thinks SS has always a Tach??)
Exterior Color is Dark Blue (original Color??) with Gray Strips on the Side.
Steering Wheel not Original ( i hate grant Steering Wheels )
I don't have good Pictures of this vehicle yet. Only a Mobile phone Picture from the seller. But it gives an idea how the Car look likes.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
Per the generic info packet in the GM Heritage Center archive:
https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/docs/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits/Chevelle/1973-Chevrolet-Chevelle.pdf
The "SS" shares the model number = 1AD37 (edited)
and the tach is not specified as part of the SS package (would have to be ordered separately).

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
I agree but the normaly ''Colonade Hardtop Coupe'' has also 1AD37. Only in the built sheet i can find the Code Z15 for SS Package. But what can i do when the built sheet not available?

I'm sorry - I missed that the base colonade hardtop coupe shares the same code (since they were on separate lines).
Nothing. The build sheet only exists in the car (if at all). Your only hope would be that the car was built in Oshawa, or was built in the US for Canadian usage, in which case the information would be available through GM of Canada.

No way without the build sheet. He as all the correct identifying pieces in the pics. Last thing to check is if the tail lights are blacked out. That looks like the midnight blue color. If so, its my factory color and stripes. My factory color interior as well. Tach has to be ordered. I have that same dash with no tach and idiot lights. If you get it, there's a real clean original SS steering wheel for sale on another forum, just pm me.

Joe - can you check your cowl data tag and see if RPO Z15 is imprinted on there?
I'm not sure which RPOs are stamped, and (at least in the 60's) there was some variation by final assembly location.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
Theres no z15 on my cowl ta and Ive never seen a 70-73 with it. Problem is all these later year ss options were only an appearance package. Ss dosent mean anything like it did when chevelles came with the 138 code meaning it had to have a specific engine package. You can get novas and camaros with 6 cylinders and an ss package.
You need a build sheet.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
Thank you.
I'm going to check my tag when I get home. Mine is not an SS but I would like to see what kind of RPOs (if any) are coded.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
The tag lists upper and lower body colors if its a two tone. Stripes are not a two tone. It also lists tbe build week, buckets or bench and body style.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
If the 7th digit of the vin is a "B" it was built in the baltimore plant like mine. I found my build sheet in the springs of the back (upright part) of the backseat cushion.
Other places I've heard of is in the bottom of the backseat, above the gas tank, under the rug, behind a door panel and inside the door.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
Yes, those are the correct tail lights. Is there something with the pic or does the rear SS emblem look too small or out of place? Is there a sway bar under there?

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
Good question. I don't know. Is the only one pic from the rear side. I cant see the sway bar. But i can check this when i look this car in real.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
Yes, 2bbl SS is fine. I had one. Just remember, SS doesnt mean performance. Its an "appearance" package. Just basically some gauges, stripes and wheels. Nothing to do with driveline in our years.
Both my SS cars, and two others I had (I had 8 or 9 total) had that color interior. They all had the off white interior with brown dash (black cluster face), brown rug, brown package tray. All seat belts were black.
Here's a pic of mine. Dont mind the seat covers and door panels, they were changed to custom. Original stuff is going back in.
Here's another one I bought a couple years ago. Rugs missing but it is brown.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
To be fair, Z15 got you front and rear stabilizer bars, and required optional engines L65 (350 2bbl), L48 (350 4 bbl), or LS4 (454). Also required M20, M21, or TH400 trans.

Re: Identify a 1973 Chevelle SS
Not any V8, couldn't get the 307 with Z15. Almost all v8s.
