Re: need help with 73 SS 4 speed shifter stick
I measured up the old knarled main pivot tube, and based on the measurements, found a steel alloy stock size in McMaster Carr, bought a 1 foot length of it for $14.00 shipped. I'll chop it to size, and see if my work prototype shop can case harden it in their oven. Might not even need it but I figure why not try. Then I'll grease all the parts with my tube of lithium (thanks for the tips Joe) and rebuild the shifter and set it aside, to make way for the trans rebuild. I have the McMaster Carr part number in case anyone needs it.

Thats cool. I wonder if a hurst tube is the same since they both use tbe same.bolts. i can measure if you like.

the tube is a 5/8" OD and a slip fit on the ID for a 7/16 bolt. The OD on my new tube measures .624 pretty consistently, and is a tight slip fit thru all the shifter pieces

Re: need help with 73 SS 4 speed shifter stick
My hurst competition plus tube measures in at a pinch over 5/8" OD (.654)
And the hole is a pinch over 7/16" (.450)
Overall length is under 2 3/4". Cant slide my tube out easily.
I didnt measure the tube on my Hurst super shifter III.
So they appear to be very close if not the same.

hmm I would find another size then if you wanted to replace that Hurst tube. you might have to have a piece of larger tube turned down to get you close to .654. Is your hurst tube beat up?

No, mine is perfect. The white lithium is still.even white with no dirt in it. I bought the car with the comp. Plus in it and I switched it to the super shifter III.
All the hurst pieces are readily available anyway.

Re: need help with 73 SS 4 speed shifter stick
Update: while my search for an original correct 1973-1974 Chevelle ITM shifter stick continues, in the mean time I can finally get rid of that Pontiac stick that dented my console! I just picked up an ITM stick from a 1980 Chevrolet El Camino which, while not the correct original 1973-1974 Chevrolet Chevelle shape, is worlds better than that Pontiac stick and won't ever come close to contacting my console anymore. The Pontiac stick has those funky bends because the Pontiac console had the opening in the center of the console and the opening was longer, vs. mine which has a more-square opening, offset towards the driver and centered on the stick mechanism.
I'm reusing that old beat up knob for now because that's what I have. Gonna sell that Pontiac stick to a Pontiac specialist.

Santa brought me a factory correct 4 speed shifter stick! The knob needs the plastic pattern insert still but the metal part is now a correct piece.
