Next project?
Now what?
The Chevelle is "done"...for now. ( we all know they ain't ever done)
So I'm looking at a 57 Chevy PU, a 63 boxtop Galaxie, and a 59 Galaxie. All for 6k or less, running but needing some work.
I LOVE anything built between 55-65.
Then my Moms-in-law asks me if I want my father in laws 31 Ford roadster (fiberglass kit car) for cheap. He passed away in September.
Grrrrrrr.
I was looking at the truck to build a kinda tribute to my g-pa. He used to have Chevy trucks as delivery vehicles for his drugstore.
The 59 Galaxie is just ******* cool, with the big fins etc
The 63 Galaxie is cheap, black and has that beater look to it. Also cool.
The 31 Ford has sentimental value, but I'd be scared to do much with it for fear of offending MIL or wife. I also have never been too crazy about 30s and 40s cars. They all look alike to me. And it's fiberglass...not crazy about fiberglass.
Opinions? And don't just say "THE CHEVY" out of reflex either.

Re: Next project?
Honesty I like big fords, and for some reason really like the one year only body style of the '59. A '63 is cool also & would probably be easier to find parts for but My vote would be '59 ford.

63 Galaxies! One of my dads favorites. Grew up around Fords but still respect my dads love of old Fords!

Whew! I thought it was just me. Good to know I'm not alone. Though I will go so far as to include late 40s in my likes. Never been fond of anything pre-war.
I think any of the others would be cool, though the PU will probably be easier to find parts for.
Which one speaks to you more than the others?

Re: Next project?
Hard to say.
That's my problem, they all do on some level.
I like something about nearly all cars and styles. I'm looking for something cheap and cool to tinker and have fun with for a while, all of them fit the bill.
The truck, I would probably keep longer since it would be a little more sentimental and needs more work than the others.
It's hard for me to get excited about anything pre-1955 or so. I like 'em, I like to look at 'em, I just don't want to drive them.
Plus the cultures around the older cars are a little crazy.
You got the "street rod" types that are usually older guys with the high dollar chromed out cars, then you got the "traditional hot rod" guys who have to have Elvis haircuts, tatoos , drum brakes and flathead engines. Then you have the rat rodders who MUST have rusty cars pieced together with duct tape and baling wire. If it ain't rusty, they pour stuff on it to make it rusty.
They all seem to hate each other. A lot. Not much interested in getting into any of that s**t.
Wife said last night she won't be mad if I pass on the 31 Ford....whew.
PS...Thanks Dynch, I didn't realize that 59 was a one year car. And it's the most expensive (and best looking) of the one's I'm looking at too. Food for thought.

Galaxie:
Going to look at it Thursday evening.Black, red interior, box top 352 with he thinks a C4, but probably a 3 speed cruiso. He says front floors a bit mushy. Dearborn Classics has floor pans for it for about $60

The guy is asking right at what Hagerty says its worth for a "#3" car.

Here's the 31 Ford...70's 351W, FMX trans, Mustang II front susp.
I see satin black or washingtin blue, tan wheels, dog dish caps and wide whites

Re: Next project?
Yeah. I'm looking at Beatersville cars to get ideas...I'm feelin kinda hot roddy about it.
They love weird cars too. Rats, customs, lowriders etc.
Beatersville is a traditional rod and custom show in Louisville every year. I love it.
Follow link, go to pix or just google Beatersville images

Re: Next project?
I had a '64 Galaxie back in college. Not much different than the '63's. Had a factory 390 4-bbl automatic and could chirp the tires at a 15-20 mph roll by stomping on it! Lots of fun with that car! 'Course at the time, I was gaw-gaw over my roommate's new '73 Monte Carlo his parents bought him for college.

Make that 2 for the '59 ... along with the cool factor, it just sorta rolls off the tongue......
Looking forward to seeing what you end up getting!

Ha!
I could have all kinds of fun with that!
If I was still in second grade.
Sorry Tom.

Re: Next project?
I went to see the 63 Galaxie last night.
Just wasn't feeling it.
The guy must be tired of talking about the car and showing it to people. He was cool, but it was dark in the barn where he had it. No lights to get under it, he didn't want to get it out, didn't want to let me drive it because he said it had a busted power steering hose. Rushed me a tiny bit so he could cut grass. Didn't seem to like that I had the fam with me. I asked his price, he asked for an offer. He's asking 3800, which is exactly what Hagerty says it's worth in "fair" condition. It ain't quite in fair condition. I hit him a little low, because he implied on CL that it's ready to drive but it isn't. He came back with a fair price, but I just couldn't see spending what he wanted for a car that I'd have to trailer home, then work on for a week before I could drive it.
The hunt continues.
Link to CL ad if anyone else is interested. It's a cool car, just not for me.
http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/5019858940.html
I've also scratched the 31 Ford off the list. MIL is waffling a little and I think she's gonna want more than I wanna give her for it.

Re: Next project?
It's a real disappointment when the ad says one thing and you see another.
Good luck finding a new project.
Cars are like women, we've all got a favorite one, but we look at all of them
Am I in trouble yet?

Re: Next project?
No, you're right.
He says it's close to ready, The motor fired right up, but it did have a miss and I smelled gas. I couldn't see anything but again, no lights or offer of any. He also left the garage door closed, so I couldn't really tell if I was smelling gas or just exhaust. He shut it down fairly quickly 'cause we were choking on fumes. Weird. It also made me nervous that the guy didn't seem to want me to REALLY be able see it or drive it. Made me suspicious about suspension issues or other problems underneath.
For 3-4k, I don't expect perfection, but I DO wanna know what I'm getting into.

You made the right call, and you narrowed down the list. If the seller is being squirrelly, there's usually a reason, and you won't like it when you find out what it is.
