Aluminum Wheels

Been working on this set of early '80's Camaro rims. I figured I'd post some pics see what others had to say or add. Not to mention I knew if there was a thread it would be more motivation to get it done than to put it off.
I picked these up about 2 years ago, and have just started sanding them down. They were gold and looked great but hadn't been clear coated so not as much work as it could have been.
I've got two of the four done, will be painting them glossy black, and then sand down the flats so they look like they do now, and some rattle can two part clear after that. Chrome lug nuts, and I just need to find an emblem for the centre that doesn't say "Z/28" on it. (Any ideas?)
I've got a 255/65/15 BFG Radial T/A's for the front and 255/70/15 for the rear.

Maybe sand the cap down and paint it black?

I wonder how vinyl would hold up on a center cap? What is the diameter of the cap?

I was hoping for a place to purchase the centre emblem, they come off, and it's just a peel and stick type thing. I'll take a picture.
I was thinking just a Chevy logo would be fine. I've seen them before at a swap meet.

Thanks Limey - that's the one. I still need to check with the local guys who do Camaro stuff and such as that's usually the easiest way to get this kind of thing. Not such a big deal to spend $5 more, but make it as easy as drive across town.

I made a set of billet aluminum plugs for my 16" iroc rims, but you need access to a lathe or someone in a machine shop. Wouldn't be expensive to make four of em.

becarefull. offset might put them to close to the tierods or frame.

Those will fit , I ran those 15" irocs decades ago, no issue.

I've already tried the rims on the car without tires and they clear everything up front, and out back too.
Corvette flags now that's an idea

The emblems are 2 1/4 " and the cap's got pegs, and clips to hold it in place.

That's looking sharp so far. I like the corvette flag idea. The plugs I made were a little tight and hammered right in with a couple taps of a hammer and a block of wood. I would paint the caps you have and attach the corvette flags to em

You can buy a set of corvette flag emblems on eBay for pretty cheap. They were one of my choices, but I chose something else.

sorry to put in my 0.02 about fitment. ive always thought they had a wider inner offset than say a stock rally.

Suggestions please.
I'm now at the point where I've painted the wheels all black and "trying" to sand down all the flats.
I've put down 4 or 5 coats of rattle can black paint. It looks really good.
The issue is I'd decided not to mask as I didn't feel I could cut a circle easily, not to mention any sort of wobble in the taping would look really bad. So the plan was to sand down all the flats, I've tried
180 sand paper
400 paper
green zip wheels
it's very very slow going.
The best results have been with the 180 and the 400 paper, but it took 45 minutes to get one spoke and part of the edge done. At that rate it'll be Christmas before I'm done.

Try wet sanding, (if you arent already) starting with 400 grit and working up (in grits) till the scratches are gone. This is how I did my m/t valve covers, Then polish I like mothers mag polish the best.

If that doesn't work, try wiping the spokes with reducer to soften up the paint some.

You could try a da sander, but I would be careful and make sure to keep it flat. Might want to try it on something else first so you know how it reacts if you have never used one.

driveit - a zip wheel is just like a da sander, except it's about 1.5" - 2" in diameter, and usually I put it in an 90 degree angle grinder, you could put it in your drill if you don't have an angle grinder. The smaller disk is much easier to handle.
