cross member question Empty cross member question

Post by A_Tame76 Mon Jun 08, 2009 8:54 pm

Does anyone know if the El Camino and Chevelle dual crossmember are different lengths? I thought these cars have the same frame? I have a friend of mine looking for one. He has a 76 Malibu, and picked up a 73 El Camino for cheap with the double crossmember. He is saying its too short for his car. Anyone know this to be true? In any case, If anyone has one they are not using, and want to sell it for reasonable, let me know.

Thanks!

The El Camino has a boxed frame for more strength and therefore mounts differantly. This makes for a shorter crossmember. JB

I've built a few transmission crossmembers from scratch many moons ago, Limey. With a little measuring, cutting and welding...... You can fab one that gives as much...... Or more...... Room for today's large diameter dual exhaust systems than do the OEM dual exhaust crossmembers. Always an option. Wink

Happy Motoring,

Harry

P.S. >>>> If you have an original, you can use it as a pattern (for fit rather than appearance) and fab up several identical replacement crossmembers to sell and make back what you spent to fab your own. It doesn't have to be made from thick wall round tubing formed on an industrial pipe bender as some originals were. You can use any metal configuration (channel iron, square or rectangular tubing, etc.) that will fit and will be as strong or stronger than were the OEM pieces.

cross member question Thumbsup Sweet! That's what I'm talkin' about, Limey. Looks well designed and strong enough to pull down a barn. Its good to see that hotrodding is alive and well. Kudos to COMPUCARRACING!

Best regards
