Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
I don't have anymore updates yet. I will soon as I get the floor cleaned and painted which could be Saturday.

Painted finally. Had to apply 2 coats cause the first looked awful. So I sanded it after 24 hours and sprayed a second coat. looks much better.

I'm using chassis Saver on the bottom. It already dulled to a satin black. I have black epoxy for the firewall and cowl and inside floor. The firewall will be finished in SEM trim black. Then I will start the body.

When you get done with yours come on down here to KY and fix mine up while you are at it.ratnfested wrote:I'm using chassis Saver on the bottom. It already dulled to a satin black. Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
Inside floor painted. I did not blast all of it, just the rust. So the Chassis saver is over a lot of splattered seam sealer and crud that the factory dripped all over the floor. But noone will ever see it.

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
Should I seam seal the cowl? I almost think it will look better left alone. I won't drive it in the rain but I could get caught in it on occasion. Maybe I will seal the places hidden by the fenders and leave that top part of the cowl nice and clean. What is your opinion?

It should be there, but since this is a nice weather hobby car, it probably won't hurt anything if its missing. I know all about cleaning up and painting something and not wanting to "ugly" it up, heck that's why I don't have a heater. I didn't like the hoses running across the engine.

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
You're still going to wash the car, right? I think you want to have something in those gaps -- any moisture accumulation in between seams is a guaranteed rust problem in the future.
My seam sealer was shot in the cowl area, so I scraped it all off and replaced it with 3M strip caulk. Does the same job, but is a lot less noticeable than the seam sealer.

I'll see how it looks on the hidden areas first. Then I will decide.

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
I took some time off for the holidays but I am back to working on the car. doors are patched. Mat and resin in and out and chassis saver on the inside. I have to fine tune the door bottoms a bit to make them look natural and I plan to put a bead of seam sealer on them to keep that factory look.

Oh and a before pic of the bad door. the other one had only small pinholes so I only used mat and resin, no patches.

Re: 77 Malibu Classic frame off resto
Motor is coming along. I am close on the body. I had a bad stamping on the drivers door that did not cause a wave in the door but instead it was just not quite the right shape. So I got creative and made a 3 foot sanding block and built up the upper part of the door till I could sand it super flat. Should be good now. I was cursing it all weekend.
