Re: New guy here from Florida
okay so I was looking at some stuff for the car cause 160hp just wont cut it and has a sloooooooow accleration (maybe its just my car??)
i was looking at a stroker kit for a 350, do i have to bore the engine over? I really dont want to if I dont have to. any advice guys?
also has anyone put a winters sidewinder shifter on a th350?
would like to get this thing on a roll sense I sold my gas saver and got some money to put into her.

Re: New guy here from Florida
Try using studs instead of bolts to seal the valve covers. Easy to just place the gasket then the cover and you will know its all straight. Then use some nylock nuts to tighten it down, works well.

Re: New guy here from Florida
Strokers will require cutting the block so the bigger crank can rotate & clear near the main bearings. They use a crank from a GM 400 small block (376 stroke vs standard 348). The bore size is also increased to a 383 or slightly larger vs 350 bore (6.28 liters vs 5.7). Usually w/ a set up like that depending on your heads & cam you'll get between 400-500 HP.
A new cam and new heads will wake up your motor & you can keep the bottom end & the pistons you have in there. I have a mild 350 build with vortec heads & manifold making about 350 horses.

or should i do a 454 and save the 350? would i have to redo the mounts or is it a drop & go? im sure a 454 has quite more stock hp and these came with them in the SS if im correct

Re: New guy here from Florida
The 73 "G3" 454 had 275 or 285 HP (SAE Net), which was the best of them.
You can get a GM "Goodwrench" 350 replacement motor & drop it right in & it'll have 290 HP for cheap. The 454 has lots of torque though, which is what's needed to move these whales around town.
A few members are doing LS-1 swaps w/ used motors. Seems like a good value right now for the money & return on performance but you'll need a transmission upgrade also & maybe the rear gears if you have the usual 2.73 or 3.08 in the back.

Re: New guy here from Florida
i may look into thanks, im trying to stay away from EFI ( personal preference ) and ive came across 2 good deals for a 350 block or looks to be a 80s model 454 for 500, which would i get more out of ither way id build it a little before i drop it in

Re: New guy here from Florida
350 parts are more readily available on the cheap if you wanna stay in that range but they always say no replacement for displacement. I say hogwash you can get just as power from the 350 ( just not the torque )

Re: New guy here from Florida
i think ima stay with a 350 i got my summit book and just wanted to start buying it all lol, but ima go headers, holly carb for now and put 3.73 or 4.10 gears, which is better? and get my winters shifter what yall think?

Re: New guy here from Florida
. You don't want 4.10's if you ever plan go drive on the freeway. I have 3.73's and even they are a bit much for extended high speed driving. You would probably be happier with 3.42's, but the choice is yours.thepossumface wrote:i think ima stay with a 350 i got my summit book and just wanted to start buying it all lol, but ima go headers, holly carb for now and put 3.73 or 4.10 gears, which is better? and get my winters shifter what yall think?

Re: New guy here from Florida
what is in a stock one? i was told its a posi ( whatever that is) but i had a buddy with 3.73 in a stock stang and it burnt tires. and wont a gear swap improve acceleration?
thepossumface- G3GM Member

Re: New guy here from Florida
A higher gear will definitely help acceleration. However, take the car on the highway and it will be screaming at over 3000 RPM. You will hate it, over work the motor, and have hideous mileage. If running the stock 3-speed auto (TH350 or TH400), the absolute max you want to go is 3.42 (which is probably still too high). The stock rear will likely have a 3.08 or 2.73 gearset. To do 3.73 and up, you will need an overdrive trans like the TH200-4R or TH700-R4 to knock the RPMs down.

Re: New guy here from Florida
alright thanks, i do want to get a 700r4 for OD, and i know it bolts up, will the drive shaft be the same? i may need to rebuild it anyways
thepossumface- G3GM Member

Re: New guy here from Florida
700r4's need the driveshaft to be shortened, and the crossmember moved back. You also need to figure out if you want to keep the lockup function of the torque converter. They are plentiful and can be had for cheap.
2004r is as direct a swap as it gets. Same size as a th350, same driveshaft, but I think the crossmember still needs to be moved back. Some have lockup, and some don't.
Both need the the tps cable adjusted correctly for proper, reliable operation and is perhaps the most critical thing to do other than making sure all the bolts are tight.
Good luck with your car!

Re: New guy here from Florida
bigredlaguna is spot on. The 200-4R is a direct swap for our cars. The x-member does have to be moved back to the TH400 position on the frame, but that's it. It's also an inch thinner on each side than the stock TH350, giving you more working room -- always a plus.
The throttle valve (TV) cable must be adjusted correctly to ensure trans life, but there are high-pressure valve bodies available out there as upgrades for both trans that make this less critical.
Both the 700 and 200 use the same TV cable, but the 200 will have less travel on it, so you may need a spring-type adapter on the throttle end to absorb the excess throttle movement.
The other difference between them is the gearing: the 700 has a slightly bigger first gear (better launch) and the 200 has a slightly lower OD gear (better mileage & RPMs). Gears 2 & 3 are the same.
Lockup converters will lower the RPMs by about 200-300 on either unit, which means less work for the motor on the highway and better mileage. However, the trade off is that they weigh more and require some sort of switch (there are numerous kits out there) to activate it.
