I'll start. Is the 5th digit of the VIN number an X or Y ? A 73 SS will not have any SS markings on the dash at all. Just the center of the steering wheel, door panels, fenders, grill and tail panel. The S3 Laguna came out in 1974. In 1973 it was just a Laguna which did not come with the round gauge package. It would be the normal rectangular speedo.

Just to be clear, anyone can order whatever they like in a vehicle back then. It could be a big block car and not be an SS. An SS package is just an appearance package, it doesnt mean it has performance anything in it. So its possible its and ordered big block car. I'd be more curious about the 12 bolt rear and where it came from. Lots of dealers back in the day would order and "customize" anything you want. Build sheet is the only way to know how it came out of the factory. Other than that stuff was added on later.

If you have both the factory build sheet and the dealer invoice detailing the modifications, then the car is pretty unique. The key is having the documented history to back up the car. There are many "Urban legend" 73-77 GM cars for this period. Some dealers were into doing things like this but it's very hard to gauge how many did what and to how many cars as it was so long ago and many have gone out of business or been sold, etc. Still, if true and the car is all original then it's definitely different.

The only Chevelle that has proven to be worth substantially more both in value & collectability (as far as what I've seen) is the 1973 427 "SS" that was modified by Motion Performance in NY and was the only one they ever produced. This has been documented by former owners as well as in magazines & other media over the years. It was sold directly to the original owner through Motion (not a dealer) and was over $12,000 new to the original buyer in March of 1973 when it was "delivered".

Search "motion" in the search tool bar here and you'll see quite a bit of info on it. The car is a "Living legend" it's still around today.

I'd guess many of us here would like to see some pics of your car. Sounds like a pretty cool find.

I wasn't suggesting you weren't being truthful. Sorry if it came off that way, wasn't intentional. BTW, welcome to the site.

You may find a build sheet yet- members have posted about where they've found them but it's been all over the place. The only place where there seems to be some consistency is on top of the gas tank. But the GM line workers tossed them in all kinds of places.

Hi!! Ok, 5th digit of your VIN is letter Y. That denotes that it was originally built with a 454. Here's the VIN decoder http://www.g3gm.com/t1571-73-77-chevelle-vin-body-tag-codes So being a factory 454 it would have come with a TH400. I dont think the dealer installed the LS-4 package because the VIN from GM says the car already had it.

How do you know it came with the flat panel speedo?

If theres no badging that says SS then the dealer would have just changed the harness to a round gauge package.

I dont think the dealer rebuilt it as an SS because they didnt rebadge it. So there's no benefit.

Maybe post up a pic of the build sheet (best) or invoice and a copy of what the dealer installed.

Still curious as to the 12 bolt.

I'm not trying to knock the car, but with whats been stated, I dont see anything unusual. Sounds like someone orderded a factory big block non-SS car and the dealer installed an SS cluster and rear sway bar. Only curious about the 12 bolt.

If you have the documentation, then it would be a unique car. Would have been awesome if there was documentation that the dealer installed an LS5, 6 or 7 in the brand new car.

But your VIN number (5th digit) says it came from the factory with a 454.

No problem at all. In my old line of work you always start at the VIN. Definitely take a look at the diff. I'm sure lots of guys will have loads of questions if its a 12 bolt. Also, take a quick look at the Federal sticker on the drivers door, right by the latch on the door. That VIN should match with dash VIN. I'm sure it will.

You have a car that anyone would love to own, a big block chevelle !!! And with a dealer installed round dash cluster, that's a winner. And at 52k, what's better? Enjoy it !!

welcome and my .02 is that no matter what get her out and drive her like she needs to be and if paper work shows that it is a dealer conversion even cooler since it proves in the later 70's (past the "best yrs " as lots of people say) gm and dealers still had the mcdonalds motto of have it your way lol
and I'm notcalling ya a liar or anything . cant wait to see paper work

X2. Any 73 BBC TH400 is a winner. The 10 bolts are great rears, built very well. We have rear end codes on here once you can get a peek. The code numbers/letters are located in between the passengers side brake & the rear diff, look on the drive-shaft side- bring cleaner & a scotch pad or you might not find it. lol
