Rear defrost in the window?
I know the rear defrost was an option as another vent in the package tray but was it an option on 77s with the heater things actually on the rear window? I'm parting out a 77 and the rear tint has big lines across it and it feels like it has defroster wires in it..

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
I don't think even the blower style defrost was avail in 77. My 77 Cutlass had Electric rear defrost & it looked like what's on today's cars pretty much.
77 RPO Codes start on Page 5....you might find something fishing through the doc.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
My 76 4 door has the vent style rear defrost so I figured maybe this was an option.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
i have a rear window out of a 77 monte that was electric. ive only seen the blower type in 73-76s. maybe its a one year only thing,or thats just the year some brainstormer thought of it.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
They both were options for '77. Never was sure why they offered two different styles of rear defrost. Think it was RPO code C49/C50. Somewhere around here, I have a blower style rear defrost from a wagon, too.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
My understanding is that a/c equipped cars got the lines in the glass and non a/c cars got the blower. I was given the blower style years ago and installed it myself. (all the holes were there just had to cut out the cardboard package tray) if I remember correctly the motor I have came from a 76/77 Monte Carlo.Mcarlo77 wrote:They both were options for '77. Re: Rear defrost in the window?
I've never seen an electric window defrost with just three wires like shown on that red car. Are you sure it isn't an aftermarket add-on?

Are there any switches on the dash bezel? I have a blower style I pulled out of a 77 Laguna but have yet to install it.

Those lines look like the edges of the window tint. The tint was cut into horizontal strips to make application easier and if the edges don't touch or slightly overlap, then you see these kind of lines.

Looking over the GM Heritage Center PDF that I posted above-
Coupes & Sedans could have ordered a forced air sytem (RPO C-50 for $49.00) Same option code/cost for wagons also.
I have never seen a factory electrical style defogger in any 73-77 Malibu coupe-only the vent style. I've seen the electric on lots of notchback GM rear window cars-like my Cutlass had & also GP, & Regal but not on a Monte it too is a forced air system. At least it is according to the GM Heritage Center info pack.
Here's the page they are all on. Scroll down for your cars.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing any Malibus or Montes with the electric defrost either...and, I've come across dozens of these cars around here. Actually, despite our cold winter climate, I see very few Malibus/Montes that came with blower defrost, either. Can't imagine why someone up here would not have wanted it on their car.
As for the notion that a/c cars came with electric and non a/c cars with blower, my '76 Laguna (may it rest in peace) had a/c and a blower defrost. There's a '76 Monte in San Diego C.L. that clearly shows a/c and blower defrost, too.

I'll get pics of the mc window, its tucked in a corner so not to get broke. I've been moving it around since 1985ish.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
Is the rear notch glass style the same dimension across the GM spectrum?
I think the sport roof glass style coupes are all the same... 4 doors are different maybe- the front glass is anyway, right?
Inquiring minds want to know

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
That looks like someone did a tint job in multiple pieces because of the difficultly of getting into the rear window area. I could be wrong though.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
That post ^^^^^^^ should be a sticky all by itself. Thanks Mr. Hollander!
So in theory- If one were to find a back glass from a GP- they could do Electric R defrost on their Monte Carlo. Via a toggle or some such other switch.
COOL.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
typical fan style,up=HI, down=LOW
heres the mc electric window
kinda looks like the fan switch
but its just got up=ON ,down=OFF, and lights up orange at the tip
ground wire on one side, hot wire on the other.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
I was just thinking, the '77 regal beater car my dad had in the early 90's had the lines in the glass. I remember because half of them (lines) no longer worked.

Re: Rear defrost in the window?
Wasn't GM all PPG glass? Who is/was National Auto Glass?
Add says "Believed to fit" they also think Monte Carlo & GP is a "Daytona" style fast back...LOL. I dunno how credible that listing is. The 1 pic also does not show the "curvature" properly. I wouldn't risk buying it for that kind of money without a guarantee it would fit. No offense to anybody.
