sonic testing 454 block
What is the average cost for this? I considered buying a tester but at 1600.00 I can't justify investing that much dough in a tool I rarely need.

Re: sonic testing 454 block
Maybe you can call around to the automotive machine shops in your area for info on who can do it.

Re: sonic testing 454 block
Are you considering buying a used raw block? Usually, I think machine shops do whats called Magnaflux to check for any structural flaws.

Re: sonic testing 454 block
Yep,I'm patiently waiting to snag a decent bare block to start a stroker project. It looks like a junkyard is my only financial option after I saw the ebay prices.I can probably get a complete 360-degree turn 454 cheaper than a bare block.Everything automotive-related in Alabama is sky-high for some reason,I think I'll move to the car-friendly midwest for better machine shop prices.

Re: sonic testing 454 block
Oh yeah, from what I've heard the sonic test is the holy grail for checking cylinder wall integrity so I was thinking this might be the best way to start in combination with magnafluxing?

You can get a short block set up for not a fortune & some w/ free shipping made by Blueprint.

It's funny- they used to put H/P & Torque ratings...IDK what's up with that.

Re: sonic testing 454 block
I guess maybe the ratings are best left unsaid because of unknown factors in each buildup. So many people are lawsuit-happy these days it might be a legal issue....just a crazy guess.

Re: sonic testing 454 block
Years ago I had a 406 that would change output with the weather but I never lost a race with it.I might have to lower the bar on my 454 dreams and go back to the 406.It will be cheaper and lighter anyway.By the way, according to the "real musclecar" owners us G3 guys are all dorks anyway.
