AC system part ID
Stopped over at a friends house today, he had a small underhood fire on his 76 Guna that fried some of the AC wiring, now he has a part left over and he cant figure out what it is or where it goes....
Any ideas?
Passed the site address on to him also, hopefully we'll see him and his stable soon!

Re: AC system part ID
I think its a selector switch for the A/C & Heater controls. I'll see if I can get a pic of mine for you tomorrow, if it's the same numbers... & If memory serves it's on the inside of the firewall in the harness where the wires come in from the engine. Should be a "female" end there as well for it.

I think so...behind the heater controls, usually wrapped up in tape w/ wires leading to the engine bay & some to the switches.

Re: AC system part ID
I have one of those from the '75 wiring harness for my Elco. I used the '77 harness. Don;t know what the thing is though. I just looked at the '76 AC wiring diagram, and nothing there looks to be that piece. Kinda wonder if it's an ambient temp sensor ? Or maybe an engine temp sensor, which is shown in the AC wiring ? I'll do more checking & see if I can find out what that is....

Re: AC system part ID
My guess is that it's some sort of thermal protection device, maybe used as a type of automatically reseting fuse for overcurrent conditions. I've seen some similar devices used in CT tubes and X-Ray tubes.
Thanks for the input, I'll pass it along!
edit: I did see a reference for a similar device in an AC option wiring diagram from a 78 Camaro and they called it a thermal delay switch (probably used to prevent the fuse from blowing to "soak" up the onrush of current when the blower is switched on High as the blower motor motor gets up to speed - similar as to what a "slo-blow" fuse does)

Thanks for that. I'll look over my diagrams & see if that is in there someplace in the '73-'77 diagrams.

Re: AC system part ID
I have something that looks identical to that in the a/c box that's mounted to the firewall has I think 2 purple wires going to it

Yep that's it...my car is a 77 malibu...maybe it could be in another location on some of these cars anything is possible with a G3 I guess. Mine is located inside the car, see the pics. Same part # although you can tell in the second photo too well.
