Tell me how bad it is...vinyl top
(I've scraped off the rust, I've got small holes here, dime-sized)
Both windshield and rear window frames are pretty bad, the back windshield was held in by about 5" worth of clear RTV. I've got absolutely no skills working with metal, but I really want to save this one.

Yeah, esp. around the passenger C-pillar where it meets the lower body, the rear window frame in the same area, and a couple of pinholes in the front glass frame...

Vinyl tops look good, IMO...but are evil. I have some rust under mine. It's barley visible, but if you look at the top of my roof at the right angle, you can see it. Glad I only have a half vinyl top...

Heres my suggestion, Fix all the holes, use fiberglass to fix the windsheild and rear window frames, get them semi straight. Buy some POR15 and prep and paint the entire roof and buy another vinyl top to install. Then worry about it agian in about 30 years when the fiberglass finally rusts out.
Oh and paint with POR15 before and after the fiberglass to seal it in. Theres also eastwoods rust encapulator which does an equally excellant job at stopping the rust.

Aaaargh! My eyes!
That makes me scared to take the vinyl top off of mine. It looks alright, but some of the adhesive that holds on the trim pieces is starting to pull off some of the top layers of the vinyl...

Re: Tell me how bad it is...vinyl top
dont never put a vinyl top on your car unless you plan on building a trailer queen or a garage ornament. in my opinion they are not ment for drivers and start to look really crapy after a while. the damage is bad but it can be fixed i see it done all the time you just have to decide if its worth it

POR-15 has some kind of vinyl roof treatment/sealant. I have a couple bottles and will put it on a couple cars come this spring (well, according to the calendar it's already spring but it's not!).

Amen!
I really don't like vinyl tops, but, ironically, 3 of my 5 MCs have 'em .
I'm afraid of what mine look like underneath the vinyl..... *shudders*

Well, it's gotten worse. The passenger side C-pillar is all but completely disconnected from the body, there's a series of holes on the top just above the rear windshield, all the lower metal under the quarter windows is shot, and I've found so much factory body filler that I'm no longer shocked that GM is currently in the crapper. Things are not looking good.

Have you considered making a convertible out of it? That would be cool! I dont remember if you use the car for daily transportation or not, but if you just put a custom made hard fiberglass toneau cover over the back seat, simular to the 1963 T-Birds, instead of a working cloth top, that would save a lot of work and look good too. Re: Tell me how bad it is...vinyl top
Before you get too discouraged, let me find some pics of an old 74 Celica I redone with fiberglass. It was worse off then yours, & when I sold it you would have thought it was rust free. All it takes is some patience, fiberglass, & as little bondo as possible. Bondo is some bad stuff after a couple of years.
