Post by TWBouska AKA Wooderson Sun Dec 19, 2010 8:14 pm

hey guys, have been looking for a good 700r4 core for a long time and havent been able to find one, finally found one online, getting ready to go look at it pretty soon. I called the guy, can tell he doesnt know jack about cars, I wanted to know what year the trans was because im only interested in 87-92, the guy said he got the trans already pulled and doesnt know what kind of car it came out of, also he says there are no numbers on it, so what I asking for help on is it anyone here knows how to ID these transmissions without serial numbers.

i got the b and m stuff, we used it in the 70 chevelle and the thing works great, when i get it all together ill give you guys a complete parts list in case you wanna try it, i NEED that overdrive with the way gas has gone up...i might leave the stock rear end gears in it too since its a daily.

with a 700 first gear is so short that you dont need much gear to get off the line. 3.42 or 3.55 is where id stay at

i thought about 3.42's, i was going to run them if i ended up putting in the 454, but with gas going up like it is i kinda put that off, but i still might just go 3.42s anyway

Unless you do a lot of drag racing, you dont need that low a gear. For a street car with a big block torquy engine and an overdrive trans a 2.73 will work fine. Sure, a 3.08 would be even better. Its these small block cars that need these real low gears because they are not as torquy. JB

yeah, i was hoping to use the big block but for a daily in a car that gets a lot of miles i think its best i stick with an sbc...i got a 010 casting 350 4 bolt motor im rebuilding so ill probablly stick with that. The set up im running has pretty good low end torque as it is, so it might be ok, rearend needs rebuilt anyways though, axles at the minimum.

When it comes to good gas milage, the way you drive has as much to do with it as to what engine you have in it. When I first got my 540 put in I drove it down to Elizabethtown and back on I-65 to break the engine in and got about twice the gas milage I expected to because I took it easy, I only got up to 70 once or twice. another good point j2b...i baby my car...its so expensive to live out here and i only make about 40k a year that i dont beat on my car at all because i cant afford to fix it for the same amount it cost me the first time around...im gonna be taking 4 of my A.S.E's (auto certifications) in May so that should qualify me for about a $10 per flat rate hour raise so thankfully that should help.

I just put a 700R4 in mine about 2 weeks ago. Excellent hwy mileage now... pretty closely doubled, around town, not so much. Do love that OD though. I used one of the older R4's (86) and he upgraded the pumps and I think he said the clutch pack assembly. I brought in a Transgo kit, and I tell you that thing rocks.

yeah im pretty excited for it, most of my driving is highway, my girlfriends dad has one in his car with a similar 350 to mine in it and hes getting about 24 mpg's highway, so im hoping for at least 22 since my motor is a little more cammed up than his.

I've used a few Transgo shift kits, mostly in TH350s. They seem better than others I've tried.
