Under the dash
Can anybody tell me what this is for? It looks broken on the right side, and there was nothing going through the half-round hole on the left side of the piece.

Re: Under the dash
I believe that what you have there is the broken inner support that the Temp Control Panel attaches to. It looks like one of the mtg holes for an upper screw is intact. There would be another one opposite of that...but that section is missing.

Yep...see those three mtg screw holes in triangular form around the large opening? That is where the Temp Control A$$'y mounts. Mystery solved... right, compadre?!

Re: Under the dash
MCarlo77, can you see if you can find one, or are you done junkyard shopping for the winter?

Re: Under the dash
As you can imagine, the persistent cold and snow cover has put the hurt on getting out and finding parts. But, duty calls and I'll venture out whenever the conditions allow. As you know, this piece is an integral part of the molded dash and will have to be cut out. Perhaps you could PM me and share just what you had in mind for reattaching a replacement piece. In other words, where would you like me to make the cuts? God knows there are plenty of damaged dashes laying around...so, availability won't be a problem.

Re: Under the dash
Will someone please explain what these 2-piece dashes are? Did GM use both types? What years or models? I've both pulled and seen dozens of dashes from Chevelles and Montes and they were all one piece. Yet, I keep hearing of people talking about 2-piece dashes.

Re: Under the dash
the padded and the hard plastic part are basically 2 separate units bolted together. Quite convenient, since its usually the upper part thats cracked. Dont know how comon they are though, you are the one that knows all that stuff Steve:)

Re: Under the dash
How are the two pcs bonded together? I always thought that when someone mentioned their 2-pc dash, they somehow had pulled the top half away from the bottom half. Interesting....

Re: Under the dash
mine is just bolted from the back side, nothing special. Its them bolts that cut their own thread (dont know how they are called in english) so it might be a homemade fix, although i seriously doubt it because that metal clips are in too. Too bad that i didnt take any photos when i had it apart

Re: Under the dash
I've got two spares of my own...but again, they are one piece dashes where the top/outer is molded or thermobonded to the plastic backing. Suppose if you worked at it long enough, you could figure out a way to separate the two pcs. On the other hand, what would be the point? Still can't find repro replacement tops...just the caps.

Re: Under the dash
When I bought repair the manual for my car, I had to buy the '74 and the supplement for the '75. So when I went to take out the dash, I looked the the '74 manual and said, "hey, I can do that! It's only 4 bolts!" Well, I soon found out that the '74 is quite different, being that it was a 2 piece and those 4 bolts weren't where they were supposed to be. I opened up the '75 supplement and it's a one piece dash and a whole different ballgame. So '74 is apparently one of the years they made it a 2-piece.

Re: Under the dash
Okay...so from what I'm reading so far, the 2-piece has been found on '73's, '74's and '77's. I've got a '73 and '74 dash and they both are the 1-piece. Seems to have been completely random. Learning something new about these cars everyday!
