Welcome
For 800 you will not be going wrong. You may want to work out a way to ship it instead of driving it til you know if it will make it that far. Look in to reanting a truck and triler to bring her home with. Should take you about a week round trip. But for 800, do it.

Re: new guy looking for info
If I was you, I would proceed with caution. The price sounds too good to be true. Have you seen the car in person? How much bondo is under that fresh white paint? Are the floor pans rusted out? How about frame rust rot? I am not saaying you should not buy it, I am saying you should know exactly what you are buying. That is one of the best cars ever made, so I hope you do save it and take good care of it. One thing that concerns me is the 12 bolt rear end with a spool, there were a few 73s that had the 12 bolt, but not many and a spool is not anywhere near as good as a posi unit on street driven cars. Re: new guy looking for info
I only know of ONE 1973 Chevelle that came with a 12 bolt from the factory & it's the Baldwin Motion. They were phasing out the 12 bolt & 8.2" 10 bolt in 71 & by 72, a lot of A Bodies already had the 8.5" 10 bolt. It is possible to swap one in, but it takes more fabrication than it's worth. This is hard facts based off of experience & also some Chevelle books that I have listing all available options & installation rates.
$800 for a 73 Chevelle that's drivable & has a title is a good deal. I got more than that out of mine with no title & not running. JB does make an excellent point about checking the car over for hidden rust. Just make sure to send the hood my way if you get it, LoL!

Re: new guy looking for info
for a long time the car had a 383 and was a drag racer the trans and rear are hold overs from that time it still has a harness in the car lol at one point the car ran on race gas strictly. the rear was put in some time in the 80's. i will see what it is but for sure it's a spool. i will ask him though.
the car has rust i am aware of this that's why i am paying $800 for it. i have know the guy for a wile. besides the rust on the sail panles that need to be patched there is also some quarter sizes holes behind the rear wheels. the frame is solid it's been on the westcost all it's life. the car is also mostly flat black now. the guy sanded downs most of the rust on the top and wnted the car to be on color.
the floors are solid the car has no carpet so it's real easy to tell lol
also i am in mt. pleasant michigan

Re: new guy looking for info
Sounds like a great deal. Sheet metal can be replaced, but a junk frame isn't going to do you any good. If you say the frame is good, I would jump on it.

what? why do you have to look at the rear i thought it had to do with the lugs

Re: new guy looking for info
Dude.... you are flat out killing me today. You need to count the bolts on the differential (pumpkin) (round thing in the middle of the axles). That's what differentiates a 10 bolt from the 12 bolt.....
A 10 Bolt rear has 10 bolts - Can you guess how many a 12 Bolt rear has?![Smile](https://2img.net/i/fa/i/smiles/icon_smile.gif)

Re: new guy looking for info
obviously but i always thought ten bolt rears were c uz theres 5 lugs on each wheel, and the 12 was 6 bolts on each wheel.
the only thing i need to learn about a car is more about the engine and trans and rear end. srry i dont have as much experience as you for i have only had my el camino for 2 or 3 years

Re: new guy looking for info
Not a big deal 8.5 10 bolts are nearly as strong as 12 bolts anyways. It sounds like you have a good deal going for you. At least the owner isn't a total stranger & you seem to know quite a bit about it's condition.
