8.5 rear ends in the 73s
I was wondering is the 73 model 8.5 rear end a bolt in axle or a c-clip axle rear end? Ive got a posi setup for a 8.5 bolt in axle rear but didnt know if itd work or not.

The chevelle uses a c-clip type rear end. When you say a bolt in rear end are you refering to the axles being bolted in? Don't quote me on this, but I don't think they are interchangeable, from what I gather, the third member is specific to c clips axles and bolt on axles.

Yes, they are two differant animals, but My dad bought mhis (mine now) 74 Elky brand new and it has the 74 Oldsmobile rear end with NO C-clips. When they ran low on Chevy rears they just put an Olds in it. There is a code number on the passenger side axle tube on the front side that gives the make (Olds,Chevy, etc) and ratio and whither its an open or posi. JB

THEY HAVE FACTORY BOLT IN AXLES. At least both of our 73s do.
The malibu is 2.73 non posi and the SS is 3.42 non posi

I now have a 3.42 posi bolt in set of gears in my Oldsmobile rear end with 31 spline Moser axles. It has had some pretty hairy burnouts, but no serious load with big slicks put on it. JB

man just pulled the wheels off the blue ss and pulled the drums and it isn't bolt on axles, guess you were right about the olds thing. kinda weird that one of our 73s has bolt ons which is the 273 rear and the cclip rear is the 342 gears

From what I understand the axel's and bearings are different but the other stuff (gears carrier, are the same)
