Need radio help Empty Need radio help

Post by RossK73 Mon 25 Nov 2024 - 9:19

Hi - a few years ago when I put a new underdash stereo in I mistakenly connected my original am/fm radio to the new style speakers.....not smart as they were not the correct amperage and my original radio has not worked since then. Is there a fuse that blows in the unit when this happens or is it toast? I have it out now but don't see anything obvious that might be suspect. Thanx!

Are you sure that something else didn't happen?

Many times I've used aftermarket speakers with a different ohm rating and it's been fine.

Can you hook the radio up to a different set of speakers with different cables? Typically if there is a serious electrical mismatch between radio and speakers it will affect/damage the speakers not the radio. Is there a separate amplifier or is it inside the radio box?

I'll have to get an 8 ohm speaker and hook it back up to try it again. It's been years since I changed it so I don't even remember if my front mono speaker even worked at the time.

Ross,
Just about any audio speaker will play well enough at 8 ohms outside of a very few large home / commercial speakers. You are only trying to verify whether it is the radio or speakers that are defective.

Just an update.... connected my radio to my newer 4 ohm speakers and it works great. Now I need to replace my front in-dash 8 ohm speaker as I know now that it is the defective component. What size is this speaker and anyone know where to source one. It looks like a job for very small fingers!! I have the ash tray and heater control out but still looks difficult. Thanks all!

I believe its a 4x10 size and I believe you can access the speaker by taking on of the Controls radio and ashtray and laying on your back in the most uncomfortable position known to mankind

this says rear but is the right size for the front center speaker

Ross,
Glad you didn't rush out to buy a new radio. Hope you get your sound back soon with new speakers.

As long as you're going in there, might want to consider the optional 2-speaker setup? Bracket ends mount in the same holes but, has a third mtg ear in the middle. I've got an extra bracket if interested. Would have to search my stash for the dual pigtail harness.

To be clear, I'm NOT a yogi but every time I need to work under the dash, I wish I was.
