Dash Pad For Sale
This "NOS" dash pad on e-Bay initially caught my attention thinking it was an original dash pad for those 2-pc dashes. After closer inspection, it appears to simply be a dash cap for a non-A/C vehicle. I messaged the gentleman and he insists this is an original GM NOS dash pad (not a cap) and was used for collision repairs. Never heard of such a thing. Any thoughts?

I mentioned the lack of mtg holes, too. He didn't respond to that. I just now got a message from e-Bay that he's dropped the price to $200.

The last good dash pad (used) I saw on Ebay was about 2016. Of course it was non A/C when I have factory A/C. Foiled again. I sincerely doubt NOS dashes are floating around but who knows?

Foiled again. The 73 dash is different than the 74-77.

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
Yeah...I got the same offer! Probably a pretty good deal if someone is in the market for a dash cap; although, still doesn't say who the manufacturer was. I'm thinking at $150, he's going to take a significant loss on this after factoring in what he supposedly paid for someone to paint it and the approx. 14% e-Bay selling fees in addition to what he paid for the cap. Not convinced the $30 shipping will cover his actual cost on a box that large, either.

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
There's another supposed OEM dash for sale on Ebay auction starting at $1600. I believe this is for Monte Carlo's as it looks different than for my Chevelle. It is also an A/C dash.

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
You can ask them a question. Yes I noticed that crack although it doesn't seem to have made it through to the front. They were responsive to me. I asked them about the puzzling box it was in. They said this was not the original but something their late Dad put the part in. I told them that was a 74 -77 pad and they changed their initial listing of 73-77. I think this is a Monte Carlo pad. Is that right?

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
This assembly is not unique to Monte Carlo.
To me, this looks like a dash assembly; the pad is attached to the rigid structure below the pad. I've read some forum members mention a one-piece vs a two-piece dash but I've only seen dash assemblies where the pad can be removed as a separate piece. This is one of those things that I'm not clear on.
This is not my area of expertise, nevertheless, I suspect GM may have changed the rigid part of the assembly in 1976 when the tach was sacrificed in favor of a vacuum (economy) gauge.

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
I'm thinking that what looks like a crack is simply mold flashing. But, I wouldn't spend that kind of money without knowing for sure.
It's true there were both 1-pc and 2-pc dash assemblies. I have encountered both when out scavenging parts over the years. Have a used '73 2-pc from a Monte Carlo and remember pulling one from a '76 Monte. By far, the most common I came across were the 1-pc., though; including the '74-'77 NOS dash I bought years ago. Interestingly, I've never seen a NOS upper pad for the 2-pc design.

I may have seen them in wrecking yards but simply not recognized one over the other.Mcarlo77 wrote:It's true there were both 1-pc and 2-pc dash assemblies.
Do you have photos of both types?
If so, may I impose on you to post them and showcase the differences? If appropriate, perhaps as a separate post in the tech section?

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
May I ask what type models this fits on? It doesn't appear to line up with my 1976 car which has standard sweep style speed gauge. Also the clock area seems odd. But maybe I'm mistaken. I have never been able to get a clear understanding of the different G3 dash assemblys.

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
The difference you're describing is in the instrument cluster, not the dash assembly. Different clusters will mount into the same assembly.

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
I understand that but I thought that there were some design differences across models or maybe years in addition to the A/C - non A/c variation. Looking in my Parts manual, the illustration for the 1976 dash assembly looks different than what is shown in the listing. To be crystal clear, the differences between the two are limited as far as I can tell to the Left Half of the dash assembly.
But you are saying that whether Chevelle, Laguna, El Camino or Monte Carlo they all had the same dash assembly 74-77?

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
The dash assembly is shaded in yellow. If you look closely or enlarge the image you can see the differences in the illustrated parts compared with the listing photos on the left side of the assembly. I have no inkling whether the differences have functional / structural significance or not.

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
It's the same dash except that it is different. I did send another email to them asking what car did their Dad have this for or was he doing multiple projects? I haven't gotten a reply yet. It's tough to sort out the significance of these undocumented issues now 50 years later. It may have been a different vendor and come under the category of acceptable variation or modify to fit. It's just that it would be a $1600 experiment.
Do these have a part number anywhere on them?

Re: Dash Pad For Sale
I have never noticed anything different on '73-'77 dash assemblies as far as the internal frame area where the gauge clusters, bezels, side air vent and temp controls mount; whether A/C or not...or, 1-pc vs 2-pc dash. My spare dashes are tucked away and kind of hard to access, but I did manage to get the black non-A/C dash (1-pc) out for some pics and comparisons to the red '73 A/C dash (2-pc). Black dash is out of a '75 El Camino that had std square gauges. My spare round tach gauge cluster mounts up just fine to it on the silver studs shown in one of the photos. Same with the matching bezel and spare A/C Temp control panel. Quick comparison to the '73 dash in that area does not reveal anything different between the two; including where the driver side air vent mounts.
