dual exhaust crossmember
Wanting to buy a dual exhaust CM and ran across one on ebay (newbie cant post links yet) It seems okay but wondering why no one scooped it up by now. Also contacted Scott from compucar and he has CM for 240 shipped. The OEM one on ebay is 100 less but thinking the one from Scott is a better choice? I assume its more sturdy then the OEM....any feedback would be helpful thanks

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
Welcome.
I'd get a good condition stock crossmember. Comes down to price. A stock one will work for any combination you can build.
Someone on this site should have one. And hit up "searchtempest.com". Punch in your zip, how far of a radius you like, click auto parts and hit search.
Lots of guys parting montes on that site. You need a 73 or 73 crossmember. 75 and later had a catalytic and a different crossmember.

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
Only 2 issues are height and length. Measure hole center to hole center in your car and one the xmember to see if they match. Height is more of a challenge off the car. Set the xmember down to the platform if face up--reverse of the pic above. Put a yardstick on the two highest points, and measure from the bottom of the stick to the top of the platform. Under your car (if you only have a single hump) you will have to get a level to make sure your yardstick is flat, then measure to the platform. You can have some small variation on that distance, can make it up with shims or run with a slightly different angle. Length is harder to change. Essentially if its not from a boxed frame--ElCo or convertible--it should be ok.

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
I'm cheap, so this is want I did.
I wish I would have taken a shot of the other side. Sorry! Worked out great and I only have $8 into it.

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
Stock '73/'74 dual hump will fit '75-'77 frames without drilling holes as long as you're not trying to install an Elkie dual hump onto a coupe/sedan...and vice versa. It's an easy install. Did it on my '75 Laguna and dumped the single exhaust/cat.

Here's what the system looks like for now. I do plan on putting tail pipes on it, but it was going to kill my budget when I had them put on.

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
I didn't think I had taken a shot of the bottom, but here is one.

Thanks. I need to get it out the back. It's a bit loud for the wife and dog, but I like it.

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
thx again for the pics. I sent them to a local metal fab shop to see if they can duplicate your set up. I never welded anything in my life. Any tips you can offer on this mod? I want to get this done fast cause my dual exhaust & LT headers arrived yesterday

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
What I would suggest is that you wait until your headers are on so you know just where to have the hump put in. If you send it out to have the "hump" put in before that, you might get it in the wrong place. Good luck sir.

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
I actually bought the OEM cross member that I posted pic of and it arrived this week. Got all parts in hand now needed to get this job done. Not looking forward to getting those exhaust manifold bolts out after 40 years of being in there but will give it shot...definitely looking forward to LT headers and dual exhaust though....

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
The bolts will come out easier than you think. Make sure you use a good six point socket so you don't round them off. None of them are bottomed out in the heads, I've never had an issue.

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
My crossmember will be her Monday. I go it from a member here. I'll have to carry the car up to the exhaust shop after I get the headers and have them install it all. That will be next after I finish up the rear of the car. Try to get some shots of how it turns out.

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
The heck with trailering it Damon. Do like I did and just drive it there with open headers. Of course, that's if it isn't too far away. When will you get the chance to do that again? lol

Re: dual exhaust crossmember

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
Very true Limey. I only had to drive about a mile to get to the exhaust shop, so I wasn't too worried. I think the biggest possibility of damage would be if it were cool or cold out and driving it too far. When shutting it off and having open exhaust valves would not be a good thing.
But damn is it fun to annoy the crap out of people that hate any car that isn't stock. lol

Re: dual exhaust crossmember
I drove mine the mile and a half at 8:00 Monday morning so my exhaust guy could get to it early. That was some fun!
