Emissions-Vapor Canister
Here's a link to a great article on Evaporative Emission Control Systems. In particular, they cover how the vapor canister works and how to maintain it. I know this article specifically covers vettes, but our emissions systems are very similar. This will explain why capping off a non-vented system would cause poor engine performance or make the engine not run at all. Dig the chick with the respirator opening the gas cap lol!
